Necron Traveller Lance Lists with Barges!

Nick speaking,

Now that I have my Necron Barges done, I need to incorporate them into a few of my lists so that I can get them on the table. First I am going to have a look at my Traveller list, which has been in desperate need of a Command Barge since day one! I have found a Veiling Traveller to be too random and he really does need a transport. I know the new ruling regarding fire points has brought up a lot of opinions on the Travellers Mind Machine ability. I am taking the view that Open Topped vehicles do not have specific fire points so he can use his ability from the Barge. Please feel free to agree or disagree in the comments section...

As for the list itself, fitting in the Command Barge really wasn't a problem. All I had to do was drop a Cryptek and a few Warriors. With a few tweaks to the other slots, I was still able to keep the Veil Cryptek in the list to give me that extra last minute objective grab chance, and I think I have done it without compromising the rest of the list...

  1. I am liking the Barges mate, looking good. The lists aren't too bad either, though I am not sure about units of 5 Warriors on foot. It's not like they are hard to kill.

As for Anrakyr, the rulebook FAQ on p5 says 'Q: Can models embarked upon a vehicle use its firepoints to draw line of sight to a unit to use specialrules or wargear (other than shooting)? (p66)line of sight to a unit to use specialrules or wargear (other than shooting)? (p66)A: No.
Q: Can models embarked upon a vehicle use its firepoints to draw line of sight to a unit to use specialrules or wargear (other than shooting)? (p66)line of sight to a unit to use specialrules or wargear (other than shooting)? (p66)A: No.Ok, so we know any model with a special rule or wargear cannot use the fire point. Looking at the main rulebook on P70 it says open topped vehicles do not have a specific firing point. Instead all passenger measure LOS and distances from the hull. Basically, the entire hull of the vehicle is the fire point. Don't think you can use Anrakyr's power, bud :(

  2. Thanks for the comment mate, I have experimenting with five man Warrior units since the Codex hit, I have found them a bit hit and miss depending the the rest of my army and of course, my opponents army! You are correct though, and I am trying to resist the new Thunderwolves and Tervigons for a couple of Ghost Arks which are on my wants list. I am thinking two Arcs and some foot Immortals should be a lot stronger troops wise.

As for the Traveller, maybe you are correct, I just don't know, I have heard so many arguments for, and against it,that I am now confussed lol. Maybe we need a FAQ for the new FAQ! lol

  3. If the Traveller can't use his Mind Machine from the Barge, I think I will just switch him over for another Overlord! In four games I have never had the chance to use his power anyway! An Overlord with Warscythe and Tachyon Arrow seems much better value, I know people say the Arrow is expensive for a one shot wonder, but I have had good experience with it.

  4. I haven't used Warriors on foot, though I do use that number inside a Ghost Ark. At least with a Ghost Ark they are safe, but on board it's not like it's hard to kill them. Things like autocannons, heavy bolters and psycannons will easily wound them and put them down on their arse. Looks like a easy kill point to me. At least with the Ghost Arks if the Crpytek survives you can regenerate them as the unit still sruvives ;)
It needs confirming if the open-topped vehicles counts as a firing point entirely. At the moment is just says there's not firing point, instead fire from the hull.

  5. I have to agree with the other people, mate. 30 points for a stronger hunter killer is way too expensive. It's not too bad with a chrono-mek, but then that increases the points and again still only a single shot.
The best use I have found for a Overlord is just sweeping tanks. Just move flat out all the time (so 12.1" +) and sweep stuff. If people are shooting at my Overlord (who gets a cover save) then my other stuff isn't. You've got to kill him and hope he doesn't get back up from R.P or else he'll scythe some more. Best performance I had out of him is when he swept a CCS Chimera and wrecked it, he then assault a squadron of Hydras and took them both out. Guard then shot him with plasma and he got back up! He assaulted the CCS and wiped them out as well. By my counts that was about 295 points of damage. My Overlord is such as golden badass, he's a golden badass because he is literally gold btw ;)

  6. I always make shooting the Warriors at distance hard with either Stormlord or double Solar Pulse, but i can see, and have experienced that they are easy KP's, hence my need for a couple of Arks. Not sure about the Cryptek being classed as a Warrior to get RP though? I thought that was why the Cryptek had EL rule?

  7. Thanks for that, I have only just got these Barges so I am just experimenting at the moment, I did destroy a key item with an arrow in my first game, but yes 30pts is a lot. Sweep attacks it is then :-). My Overlord (and all my other Lords) are gold as well! Got my Stormlord and Overlord pic's coming up in a few posts time :-)

  8. I thought the same lines as you. However, if the Cryptek joins a squad of Warriors then the Cryptek is consider part of that unit. The Ghost Ark says if a unit of Warriors are about blah blah blah, the Cryptek isn't a Warrior exactly, but is in a squad of Warriors. Does that make sense?

  10. I've just had a flick through the FAQ and cannot see an answer their! I would say because he's part of the unit and gains all the other benefits of joining the warriors IE becomes scoring, still keeps ever living, also the wording of the codex says 'necrons' and then goes on to say add d3 models back to the unit, I'm gonna go you can!?

But that then raises a problem of if a cryptek is left alive on it's own (after joining a warrior squad, it's still scoring) can you add warriors to the lone cryptek?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I prefer the double barge list, but as Mercer pointed out, Anrakyr cannot use his machine power from a barge, I'm not so sure he's worth the extra points invested over a normal overlord, but he does make that squad of immortals better!?

I think I'd go with normal overlord and invest points else where like more Crypteks with lance, because the FAQ also states that a squad can be joined by more than one cryptek, so you can take one from royal court no1 and another from court no2! it will also beef those Warrior squads out a little more, while increasing your ranged fire power! :)

  12.  I still say you can't do it, the rules for RP say "if the unit is
destroyed they cannot come back, characters do not count as part of the
    unit for RP"

So is a Cryptek a Character? FAQ says page 1 last paragraph) "Q/If an
entire unit is wiped out including an attached character from a Royal
court, do you get to make any RP rolls? A/You would only get to make one
roll for the attached Character as he has the EL rule"

    ReplyDelete
  13. Like I said to Mercer above, I don't think you can, plus the Ghost Arc says "nominate a unit of Necron Warriors" not Necrons, A Cryptek by himsefl is just a troop Cryptek and is not classed as a Warrior

    ReplyDelete
  14. I totally agree with you that the second list is better, as for the Traveller, it all depends wether or not an open topped vehicle is classed as one big fire point or not? Some read it that it has no specific fire points so the Traveller can use his ability, and others say that the whole vehicle is a fire point!

Seems like I will be painting up my other Overlord next then, just in case

  15. I don't think the cryptek is scoring as it's a hq choice.

  16. That's true, though that's for r.p and not the ghost ark regenerate ;)

  17. I believe once the Cryptek joins the unit he becomes the units leader and part of that troops choice, just the same as a Space Wolves Wolf Guard does

    ReplyDelete
  18. Doesn't the Ghost Ark Regenerate say it can regenerate any Necron Warrior (haven't got my book at the moment, but I think that's what it says). So the Cryptek by himself does not count as a Warrior and the normal rules apply?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok, but say if just the wolf guard remains then he can't claim objectives as a elites choice.

  20. At first i agreed with what you're saying, but others have said i am wrong. The reason is the cryptek is part of the warrior unit, just like a wolf guard is to grey hunters.

  21. This is what is in the Space Wolves FAQ says, so I think it is the same for Crypteks...

    Q. If a Wolf Guard Pack Leader has joined a unit of
Troops, does that unit cease to be a scoring unit? And does the Wolf Guard cease to count as an Elite model? (p86)
    A. When a Wolf Guard model joins another unit
because of his Pack Leader special rule he becomes part of that unit to all intents and purposes. For instance, a Pack Leader that leads a Troops unit will still be able to claim an objective even if his Troops unit is wiped out – he is considered to be part of that Troops unit

  22. Maybe then, been searching this one on google and like the traveller rule there are a lot of opinions on this! Seems like we need another FAQ already lol

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ok, cool. So ghost ark regenerate would work too.
